Chuck walked through the event horizon and stood in utter silence. The very strangeness of the fully manned command area having no noise struck him immediately, and he likewise became silent, wondering at what threat must have reared its ugly head while they were offworld.

Marran grinned. "Yes, that would be wonderful. Our people will be so excited!" She hurried off toward the Athosian quarters with the dogs at her heels.

Chuck took one of the bundles from Marran before trailing behind her and the dogs. The joy of these people to recovering some of the former lives was palapable, and he felt privileged to have witnessed any of it.

Challat hurried with them, chattering excitedly about all the things they had found, and the food they had recovered. "Charin will want tuttleroot soup, no doubt," she exclaimed happily.

A few minutes after Chuck, John brought the jumper through and up to the bay. Once they had landed, John let Jackson and the Athosian carefully lift the dog in its sling and take it out of the bay before calling for a few marines to come help him unload. He started to do what he could while he waited, setting stuff down in the hallway with the idea of just getting the jumper empty as quick as possible.

Jack pulled the dog out of the jumper, holding the sling carefully so as not to jar it, and radioed Carson. "Jackson to Beckett. Hey, doc, I've got a patient for you."

Halling and the others arrived in the great city, a bit out of breath from their trek back to the Ring. By the time they arrived, many of the Athosians were waiting for them, with others hurrying in and out of the Jumper Bay carrying items that had been loaded ( ... )
