Day 27, Lunch; Cafeteria; Attn: Dumais

Aug 31, 2007 00:04

Before gonig to the greenhouse and labs for the day, Ridley checked out both sets of apartments that Fields had located for him. Each had its pros and cons, but both were certainly workable. He decided to leave the final decision till he'd shown them to Suzanne.

The day positively crawled until lunch time. )

"But if you're this tired, you're liable to get injured," Lee argued. He considered her face. She looked really pale. "Maybe I should take you to the infirmary."

She shook her head. "Non," she said firmly. "I'm just overworked. Maybe you're right, though ... I can probably ask Doctor Collins to check on my one project, and the other will hold until tomorrow."

She didn't mention how much she worried about those sorts of projects, given that they never knew when the Wraith might find them and try to kill everyone in the city. They really didn't know if they had a tomorrow, after all.

"All right. Just let me finish up here and then I'll walk you home. You should try to eat more if you can."

Ridley knew the feeling, though-- famished, but too tired to eat. He'd have to ask her after she'd gotten some rest.

He ate quickly, gently running his thumb over the back of her hand, both of them comfortably silent around each other.

Suzanne nodded. "Okay," she agreed. She knew she had lots to do and probably shouldn't even attempt to take time off, but on the other hand, Lee was right that being so tired could be a risk to herself or others. Ancient technology was very advanced but not always operational, or not always operating as modern-day humans might consider logical, so the dangers of working with it remained very real.

She managed a few more bites before she just couldn't face eating any more, her body almost tingling with exhaustion. "I think I'm done," she said, squeezing his hand back.

"Me, too," he said, pushing his plate away. He'd finally gotten the servers to give him relatively small portions after turning in tray after tray with food left on it. He wrapped up a couple of cookies and a roll for later. "I'll get the trays."

He dropped both trays off and then returned to the table, retrieving his computer and jacket. He slipped an arm around Suzanne as she rose, feeling strangely warm and protective as she leaned into him just a bit.

"Come on."
