He remembers what it was like in her palace, where small hunched creatures scurried to meet his every need, sidling away if he looked at them directly. He remembers the taste of foods never dreamed of in this time, and the feel of silk sheets against his skin.
He looks around his shabby apartment in Deling City with the moth-eaten couch and the sound of rats in the walls. His shower is half-overgrown with mold, and the kitchen floor is stained beyond repair.
He would far rather be here than with her, for at least here, he has his pride.
