Last night there was an open mic at Lost Valley. It was good--it brought a lot of people from outside the community, a couple of whom performed some great stuff. I heard an interview with Grey Larsen on WFIU (Bloomington's public radio station) the other day. He said that he went to music school and did the whole composer-performer thing, and by the four year mark, he was totally over it. Discovering that, in Bloomington, there can be things like house parties featuring square dances, totally blew him away, and that was the kind of music he wanted---music as community. It was interesting to hear him articulate it. I've been to a party with a tiny contra dance, and it was incredibly fun. I need to get to know more dance callers. And I need to have such a dance at my house!
