They could cause people totally wouldn't be expecting it. The self sacrifice thing has happened with every movie, Kyle Reese, Arnie, Kate Connor's dad and Arnie again, time for something new.
Call me heartless but I had more invested into the machine surviving.

Yeah, and it's not like it those "homage" lines were done well either. They were done so blatantly that it was AWFUL.
Also why the hell would they spend so much time focusing on Marcus and then to kill him off? I was expecting them focus more on Connor, but instead they focus on the man!robot and then when we get some sort of personality they kill him in a lame way. Which pretty much makes the movie completely pointless in the ways of character development.
