Hairstyles in Inda.

Apr 29, 2007 13:26

So this is just me spouting some curiousity here, mainly because I've been wondering for a bit, but in Inda, it talks about all the sailors putting their hair in four-stranded braids. Does anyone have any idea what exactly this looks like and how to make one? And is it at all similar to a Man O' Warsman's tail (although I have no idea how exactly ( Read more... )

One type of four-stranded braid is a herringbone braid. Apparently it's what Legolas has in the Lord of the Rings movie:

That's a pretty awesome website. Almost makes me want to grow out my hair... but I just haven't the patience! Though I really want to learn how to french braid my own hair... I guess the way I was really doing it was the dutch style.

Very cool!

I want to try one of the crown ones--but I know it would take me tons of practice, and I'd look pret-ty scary in the meantime.

The crown ones are HARD. I tried numerous times to do one on myself, and it always ended up looking vaguely like I had a hedgehog stuck to my head.

Haha.

On the other hand, it probably also depends on the length of your hair. Mine was waist-length-ish at the time, and I finally decided that it was a bit TOO long for someone trying to learn.

I'm going to start practicing again as soon as my newly-cut hair grows out enough.

That is an awesome site. I cut about a foot off about a month ago. Its still long, but it is about an inch too short for me to put up in the singe stick wrapped the way I used to. Therefore, it has spent alot of time ponytailed or braided. I can put it up, but it likes to have the ends flip out(they hang around shoulder length-its annoying) or I have to dig out pins. I can't wait to play with some of those braids.

I envy people with a talent for hair. I think I tried using this site when my sister and I were dressing for the Lord of the Rings midnight showing...it didn't go so well.

That's my problem too. It doesn't help that I have baby fine, spiderwebby hair that doesn't like to stay in updos.... Or maybe it's just I don't have the patience to do it right!

for me it is a patience thing, which is sad because I have finally grown my hair out long enough that I could do something like this. No one in my house braids hair :(.

asakayiume put up this link to a site with braids--look at the square or flat four strand braids. It doesn't have to start high on the head (that is very difficult to do to oneself, especially on a heaving deck with no mirror!) but can start at neck level, which is how Inda does it, so curls are constantly escaping round his face because he's impatient and sloppy. Basically sailors often never cut their hair--it gets in their eyes if short--and just braid it. In winter, you could wrap your own braid round your neck for warmth, you could also stick weapons through it, and tools.

The man-o-warsmen braids were tight three-strand braids, usually with black pitch smeared on to make them stiff and to last all week. And to keep the lice out.

you could also stick weapons through it

I now have the perfect excuse to keep my hair as long as I like--self defense FTW! OTOH, airport security might now think braids are the new cause for concern...

But they can't ask us to remove them, bwa ha ha!

Thanks! That actually makes a lot of sense. Any idea why exactly they chose four strands instead of the easier three? And how do you put tools or weapons into your hair?

I appreciate the info on man-o-warsmen braids btw. I've been reading about them off and on, but I've never really read a good description of them up till now.

You're very welcome. I'm also growing out my hair (although it has a ways to go!), and I've been looking up hairstyles once in a while. The concept of a four-stranded braid caught my eye, and I've been wondering ever since.
