...Well. Because the evil bureaucracies weren't fun enough the first time around. Showed how rusty I've gotten, that's for damn sure. Alastair, you are the crappiest administrator I've ever seen. And let me tell you, I've been around the block a few times on that front. Really now.

Sylar. Durden. Costigan. You'd all make pretty decent demons. ( Read more... )

&billy costigan, [port: masterworld], #audio, &damon salvatore, &jace beleren, !ic, idle hands are the d.... well y'know, fucking ouchies, &jack/tyler durden, &hayley stark, post-port stuffs, let's not do that again please

Yes. If we can avoid knife fights in the future I'd really prefer that.

My jaw is doing well, thanks.

I've had worse. A lot worse.

[Next to demonic poison and torture with the very blade he used on Belthazor, this bruised jaw is really nothing. He takes a seat so they can get on with this and not linger over the injuries they caused one another.]

Things didn't go very last time. Lets start over. I'm Jace Beleren, I am a Planeswalker and a mage.

Belthazor, demonic assassin. Pleasure to meet you.

I'll admit, I really don't have much experience dealing with demons personally. My knowledge is mostly academic.

But that assassin part... one of my good friends was an assassin. I don't think it needs to be said, but I do expect you to not kill people here.

[He snaps his fingers.] Darn. There goes my weekend.

[An eyeroll.] Killing was a job, albeit it one I took a great deal of pride in, but still. Just a job - not a hobby.

Yes. You'll just have to find other ways to spend your free time. Have you considered taking up painting?

[Although on a more serious note]

Have you thought about what else you might do for a living? There's work here on the barge, but obviously you'll need to be able to do something once you leave.

...Painting. [Epic deadpan is epic and dead.]

Well, I did have a law degree, but I'm pretty sure that's out of the question at this point. [He shoots Jace a sardonic look, eyebrow arched.] But leave? Where exactly am I going?

Well, you're not going to have to stay here forever. Eventually you'll be... reformed. I'm pretty sure you can leave then if you want. [Or vanish mysteriously like Jace's last inmate]

And what is a law degree?

Reformed. [A derisive snort shows just how well Bel thinks that is going to go.]

Basically proof that you're educated enough to be a lawyer. Lawyer being someone who's paid to step in and mediate disputes, prosecute and defend criminals, and drown in meaningless paperwork. [A shrug. He had to explain what the hell a lawyer was no few times before to other demons at the start of the infiltration.]

So a lawyer works to preserve order. [Sounds like something Heiromancers would come up with. A demonic being dealing with something so order related just sounds a little weird to Jace.]

Would you want to do that for a living?

Depends on who's paying, really. During these disputes, each side gets a lawyer who tries to win.

Oh, hell no. It was just to establish a deep cover. I barely did enough to earn a salary.

Then perhaps you should spend some time thinking about what you would like to do with the rest of your life.

There are jobs here for inmates if you'd like to work.

It doesn't require that much thought. There's however long this lasts before they ship me back where I'm supposed to be - [He shrugs, all calculated apathy.] wherever it is that vanquished demons end up. So sure, I'm willing to kill some time until that happens. Don't have much in the non-assassination skill set, but. Whatever.

Humor me, then. Think of what you'd like to do with the rest of your life, assuming you don't get sent to the demon afterlife. You don't have to answer right now, but I do want you to think about it.

[An eyeroll.] I don't need to think. The rest of my life is going to go the same as every other idiot warlock, vampire, and demon who got themselves killed. Some other schmuck will wind their way up the ranks, and the fight between good and evil will go on like it always has and always will.

Simple and clear cut as black and white.

It doesn't have to go like that, though. This place is about second chances.

The fight between good and evil is never simple and clear cut, I should know. You don't have to be what others expect you to be.
