Even as the monster started back toward Abe, something seized it from behind and flung it sideways. It hit a tree trunk with enough force to send a shower of autumn leaves cascading down over the combatants.

Carrot, his eyes still on the creature, gripped Abe's wrist and pulled him to his feet. "I'm afraid it won't stay down long at all. Are you injured, Abraham?"

With his free hand he plucked the gun free and started to hand it over. Then his mind registered what he held in his hand and he stopped, his eyes darting to the weapon with shocked dismay in his thoughts.

Not now.

But it's a gonne!

And that is a monster. Worry about the gonne later; stop the monster now.

His mouth thinned into a tense line, but he pressed the weapon into Abe's hand without a word.

He coughed, grunting as he was suddenly on his feet and a twinge of pain poked sharply at his side. He looked up with a gasp trying to regain the oxygen in his lungs to see Carrot's face not far from his ( ... )
