There was no recognition as Kaylee looked at him. In fact, he thought he saw fear! What he'd been looking for in her eyes for the first several months after she'd found out who he was, and failed to find, was there now. She was putting on a good show of toughness, but she was afraid.

"You're - you're in my house," he replied, bewildered. "You fell asleep here last night. Kaylee... it's me."

No recognition at all. Had he done this? The experiment he'd been working on last night hadn't had anything to do with memory erasure, but he always had a few things in the works. Had something combined with something and gone off? He racked his brain to think what in his lab might have caused this effect.

"...Billy," he tried again, watching her face. "Cranston?" Still nothing. He was starting to reach the point of full-fledged alarm. If he had done this, could he reverse it? If he hadn't done it, could he reverse it? His hands hung uselessly at his sides. "I won't try anything." Unless it could fix her. "I promise. I'm... your friend. I'd ( ... )

Simon. Billy winced. Right. The last she remembered, she liked Simon. Naturally she'd wish he were here living with her.

That didn't make Billy jealous at all. He throttled it down. Now was hardly the time.

"Yeah," he said, and his voice sounded a bit odd. "Try the one with the little heart etched on it. I think it's that one."

Kaylee tried the heart key (which she was fairly sure she'd etched herself- it was something she would do), and it opened the door to the building. She looked up at Billy, a mite bit confused and a little bit impressed.

"You must know me awful well, knowing that," she said, searching Billy's eyes. "We're friends, you said?"

...ohcrap. Billy wanted to pull his eyes away from her too-discerning gaze, but he couldn't. Trapped by her like a deer in headlights.

"Uh." His voice was low and a little rough, and he swallowed against a dry throat. "Yeah." What was he supposed to say, we're together? I'm your boyfriend? We're in love? Why should she believe him? Hell, he scarcely believed it himself most of the time.

Trying to break the suddenly tense moment, he nodded jerkily at the door. "Shall we go on up? It's, ah, 301B."

It was plain as day that there was something else Billy was thinking of saying, but Kaylee let it slide- the day was odd enough already without worryin' about other peoples' secrets, right?

They went up the stairs, Kaylee looking around all the time and trying to let it all sink in. This is your home now. You live here. It's 2010, you're on Earth.

They reached the apartment, and Kaylee unlocked the door, though it took her a moment to actually turn the knob and open it.

The apartment was pretty sparse- a lot of mis-matched furniture, but Kaylee could see bits of things that looked like she might have put them there- a pretty picture in a frame, a wooden chair painted in swirly shades of pink and purple.

However, what made Kaylee gasp was the sight of her parasol, folded up and sitting near the door. Just as though she'd set it there for the next time she went out in the sun.

"I guess you wasn't fibbing, huh?" Kaylee asked, picking up the familiar object. "I know this is mine."

Billy let her precede him into the apartment, keeping quiet while she looked around. He tried to imagine what it would look like through her eyes, seeing it for the first time. To him, the apartment was all her, though they spent more time at his place or at the airfield than here.

He was a little bit annoyed and a little bit thankful that Jayne didn't seem to be there.

When she found the parasol, he wasn't sure what to think. This had to be so hard for her. He was still hoping it wasn't his fault, but even if it wasn't, it wasn't easy watching her struggle.

"Yeah," he said quietly, watching her. "I guess you had it when--" An awkward shrug.

Kaylee bit her lip, setting the parasol back down in its place. She walked further into the apartment, her eyes wide the whole time.

"That looks like things River would draw," Kaylee said, pointing to another picture on the wall and smiling a little.

She wandered down the hallway, mostly quiet as she looked in each room. The first bedroom door was open, and Kaylee glanced in. This room had to belong to Jayne- it looked far too much like his bunk back on Serenity to belong to anyone else.

"Jayne- Jayne's been here for a while, too?"

"Yeah. I think he turned up a little after I met you. He and I don't really..." Billy shrugged again, and grimaced, glancing into Jayne's room and then looking away. "I know he's your friend, but he's kind of an asshole."

He moved off a few feet down the hall, but waiting for Kaylee before opening any of the other doors.
