Nothing's going to come crashing down on him this time, noooo...

Who: Billy & Kaylee
When: BACKDATED to the day the amnesia hit
Where: Billy's house
What: What do you mean, who am I?

Billy was slowly settling into his relationship with Kaylee again. It had taken him a long time to really accept the situation, always braced for something to go terribly (Horribly) wrong. As nothing did, he'd finally, cautiously, allowed himself to become comfortable with the idea that she wanted to be with him. That he could be with her. That they loved each other, and that it was normal, in a way his life had never been. Dr. Horrible reared his head less often. Stopped objecting quite so vehemently. Billy grew stronger with every minute Kaylee was there.

And then she vanished.

He'd nearly gone mad. Well, madder. Clear off the deep end. It was all I knew this would happen and where could she be and she's better off gone and I'm better off alone and I miss her, I need her and how could I have been such an idiot and Kaylee, Kaylee, Kaylee. It was Penny all over again, except she wasn't dead (probably) and that was better worse better different, because every time he thought he'd put her out of his head he'd be caught off guard by the terrible hope that she might still come back.

He was a wreck. The only good thing was that he'd been so conflicted that he hadn't had the focus to do any real damage, though if she'd stayed away just a little bit longer, who could have said?

The world would never know. She had come back. And he hadn't believed it. When she'd first appeared, he'd thought she was a hallucination. Then she proved to be real, but after she left he became convinced it had been a dream. Once he was finally sure he wasn't delusional, he went back to waiting for things to come crashing down on him again.

Through all this, Kaylee was there, endlessly patient. She made it difficult to doubt her, when she was standing right in front of him, touching his face, kissing him...

When, like last night, she stayed over and they sat cuddled together on the couch watching movies, and she fell asleep with her head on his shoulder, not even waking when he turned off the television, reluctantly extricated himself and settled her more comfortably to sleep while he went to check on an experiment. When she was still there when he returned, and sat down in the armchair just to look at her.

When he woke up the next morning, his neck stiff from sleeping in the armchair, and she was still there. Still real.

Maybe this was something he could believe in again. Really let his doubts go for now and forever.

Smiling to himself as he rubbed the back of his neck, he left the room to change clothes and see about some breakfast.
