Clarice came hurrying up a few minutes later, Safina scampering along at her heels. She wore her usual worried expression, but when her eyes lit on him, it was replaced by a smile. Ever since he'd suggested this, she'd been looking forward to it. And for once she had no work and no practice, just the whole afternoon to spend with Troy.
She hesitated for only a second before hugging him quickly. Her gloved hands lingered on his arms as she pulled back. "I'm sorry I made you wait! Have you been here for very long?"
Troy hugged Clarice back, holding her maybe just a little longer than a regular friend would. He pulled back and gave her a warm smile, very happy to see her.
"I've only been here a minute or two," he said, "so nah. Hey, Safina." He bent down and petted the little puppy's head. "So where should we go first?"
Safina wriggled in delight and tried to lick his hand. As if taking a cue from her mistress, she'd gotten over her shyness of Troy pretty quickly, and she clearly loved the attention. Clarice giggled at her antics.
"Oh - I don't know? What are you looking for?" She had an odd sense of déjà vu suddenly. "There's the bookshop? Or, or the music store..." If Troy's friends at home were as into music as he was, maybe that was the way to go. "Or, Teaspoons sells teapots and mugs and things..."
Troy laughed at Safina's wriggling, scratching her head. "Yeah, that's a good girl." He stood up.
"Music would be totally awesome," he said. "I don't know how much reading my friends do. I know that sounds terrible, but that's basically true. I mean, I don't remember anyone much besides-anyway." He'd been going to say he couldn't remember anyone in high school reading besides Gabriella, but he still didn't like to talk about her. "And yeah...everybody at home is as weird about singing as I am. I mean, we all sing. You wouldn't believe it if you came home for a visit with me. Which, would you like to sometime? Not now, but you know someday."
