She'd been away far longer than just a week or two. River spent almost two months on a planet with music and singing and just enough people to not feel lonely. Things got better, there, because she didn't have to think about...well...anything. Just the sky and the music and the endless stage filled with dance partners. River had nearly been sad to leave, but --
Well, she had another family to take care of, didn't she?
Inside the familiar TARDIS, her hands curled around the lip of the console, keeping her weight steady and balanced. "They might notice." She peered over at the Doctor on the other side and smiled mischievously. "Would it matter?"
The Doctor's smile widened at River's grin. "As long as Kaylee doesn't brain me with a socket wrench. I don't think she was prepared for you to be gone so long. Well, it wasn't as long for her as it was for you, but I'm sure she missed you."
He wasn't entirely joking about Kaylee being upset with him, but he knew she'd forgive him. That was just her nature.
"Living room it is then!" he cried, spinning a dial as they left the vortex with a small jolt and began to materialize on Earth once again. Smack dab in the middle of River's front room.
As luck would have it, Jayne had just returned from a run when they arrived. He was in the kitchen inhaling a glass of water when he heard the first faint whirring sound coming from the next room.
Old habits die hard. In an instant his gun was in his hand, safety flicked off, and in three quick strides he was beside the doorway into the living room with his back to the wall. Warily he peered around the doorframe.
The blue box slowly fading into view in the middle of the room was not reassuring.
On the side facing him was something that seemed pretty clearly to be a door, and Jayne didn't see any sign of exterior weapons, so he took a chance. Stepping out into the middle of the doorway, he leveled his weapon at the door at chest height and waited.
River laughed and pressed a hand over her mouth. "It is the living room!" Kaylee wouldn't mind. Sure, she'd fret a little over a couple of overturned vases and fluttering papers, but in general would be glad just that River was home. No problems in the foreseeable future, as River went to the door, pushing it open. No problems --
Hello, Jayne.
She blinked at the gun in what seemed to be genuine surprise at first before rolling her eyes skyward. "We don't like having guns in the house. Kaylee will be displeased."
