She was eight, and all alone.
Her bed was too big for her, and certainly not the color she had remembered. River's bed was a small one, soft and lush and patterned with autumn leaves. This one was too big -- far too big, set in a room that was stained with age and rich red walls. She hid under the covers, whimpering. "Nnnn...." Not to mention, the size of her pajamas was -- "All wrong!"
Frustrated eight-year-old limbs kicked off the heavy comforter, becoming entangled in the bedsheet until she rolled off the bed, hitting the floor with a dull thump. It wasn't long before her shrill voice was calling for her brother.
"Simon! Siiiimon!"
