In truth, Snape wasn't drunk. Having no desire to wait for alcohol to have its affect, he did something he'd only done four other times in his life.

He drank a potion for purely recreational purposes.

If one could call getting completely numb recreational.

When House arrived, he was merely drinking to heighten the affects of the potion. Overall, he was well pickled.

He nodded toward the bottle of Firewhiskey sitting on the cabinet. "Wizards brew. Drink up," he said, taking another sip from his glass.
