I'd briefly entertained the notion of what would have happened to Jack after the rift closed, but it didn't make for much happy thinking so I was more inclined to ignore it, lol. You however, have made such a wonderfully bittersweet tale out of the idea.

Yay an opinion sharer. I sat through that ep going "Omg it's the sweetest thing ever... but yet so illegal in 1941..."

I figure that Captain Jack I was probably told "Take them up tomorrow, but once their last training flight is over you're facing a court-martial." Because they couldn't have had many instructors able and willing to step in that that late date, so he'd have had that one last fateful flight. He probably wasn't too worried about getting out alive if he'd never fly again anyway.

Anyway, great story! Consider me hollering, I'm a sucker for romantic smut.
