Would love to follow up the idea but am busy trying to get a multi-part Jack/Jack fic written in which Jack 41 follows Jack and Tosh through the Rift and must adjust to life in 2006 and the associated dangers of falling in love with and being in a relationship with Jack. I have an idea that he might have a fling with Ianto, but at this stage it is only an idea so may not happen.
For some reason, I have an idea that Jack 41 and Algy may already know each other which makes the idea of a threesome with Jack very appealing to me. I'm not totally sure how it would work but would love to see one of the very talented writers attempt to write it.
The romantic fool in me can also see Jack marrying Nancy and settling down to raise a family, having not died in battle the day after he meets Jack. He is happy with her but never forgets the man who stole his heart for that one night at the Ritz. Again, I'm not sure of all the details but would also love to see this written.
So many ideas and possiblites...so little time to write them all *SIGH*
Well that's one of the many ideas I love. And hee, Ianto *pets Ianto*
Hmmm. That's interesting about Algy. Perhaps they know each other vaguely and he might not know 41 Jack's first name... I knew this was going to give me ideas...
I could see that too, the settling down and being happy. And it could be very sad, almost bittersweet, perhaps presuming that our Jack was the one who died.
This brings up some interesting issues concerning the boundary between fanfic and original fiction, I think. One of the main appeals of fanfic is that it allows us to explore the characters and relationships we know and love in ways that canon doesn't get into. 41 Jack is certainly a canon character, but most of the little we know about him concerns his relationship with and parallels to our Jack. Writing him with other characters in ways that still deal with our Jack is one thing, but I think writing him in a context that doesn't deal with our Jack at all is quite different
( ... )
Oh I think you've just made *the* point. The idea of fandom vs original fiction, when laid out like this, is part of the reason why I've never really contemplated real Jack with anyone other than our Jack
( ... )
And I think that's where I am coming from - 41 Jack does exist for me outside of our Jack. He's not just the guy whose name Jack took and found attractive, and never has been for me.
And yes, I think it all comes back to characters in the end.
I'll give anything a go once. Twice if I like it ;)
I haven't really thought of original!Jack with anyone but our!Jack, until I thought the other day "what if he was in a relationship with George?".
Either it is a total secret and Nancy is a cover or known to some of the others and it was broken off. It would explain some looks George and orginal!Jack gave each other and why orginal!Jack looked guilty (not just generally 'this is wrong for men to do' guilty) and why George was upset at orginal!Jack dancing with our!Jack but still, didn't look like he was gonna go on a homophobic killing spree... if that made any since. :/
And we know m/m relationships happened in the military in 1941 because Algy and Jack were that 'familliar'.
I just don't think orgianl!Jack and Algy knew each other because to Algie, our!Jack is THE Jack. Ya know?
I guess if I really wanted to, I could see real Jack with another character that I particularly liked (such as Ianto or Tosh). But for characters like Owen and George- one of which I'm not all that keen and other of which I don't know much about- I'd be a bit more hesitant to play around with.
I do like my rare-pairs though, so I'd give anything a shot at least once. But I think the reason why I find it so hard to picture real Jack with anyone other than Jack, is because (and it's pretty similar to the points srin has made) I can't see Jack existing as a character without our Jack.
Does that make sense? I don't mean that if he were to be written without our Jack making an appearance that he'd be any less of the character we've all fallen in love with, just that for me, the reason as to why he's such a fantastic character is because he's with/was with Jack.

I like my happy endings, me XD

*nods* I can see that, it does depend on how keen you are on the characters.
And as I said above, I can - I have to - see 41 Jack as a character who exists without our Jack.
It makes sense, yes. I don't quite agree with you, but I see where you're coming from.
And I can think of so many happy endings :)
