I don't know if Jack would've wanted to be a hero when he took RealJack's identity. When you think back to how he was in The Doctor Dances and The Emtpy Child, it's fairly clear he has no desire to be a hero -- in fact, he's somewhat of a coward. He's looking out for himself, with no thought for the consequences. I don't think Jack at that stage really cared about the identity he stole. I think maybe later on -- maybe after Parting of the Ways, when he was back on Earth -- he looked up more about RealJack, and found out more. I just can't see the Jack we first meet in Doctor Who wanting to be a hero. *shrugs* but maybe that's just me ( ... )

I'll throw in a rambling thought of my own: it seems on the surface that the two Jacks are total opposites. But could it be that they see something of themselves in each other? (or I could just be completely on the wrong track here^^)

the fact that he's come face to face with the man he's wanted to be...

I get what you're saying there, however I'd probably twist it a little: the man he's unwittingly (or unwillingly) wanted to be. Jack used to be "I was much better off as a coward" and still did the right thing (so he's accidently turned out like original!Jack even thoguh he never wanted to be? *lol*). Um, okay I'll stop my rambling there...*g*
