Hard to believe, but we almost went through an entire BotCon without a single game of Paper Telephone. Luckily the remaining few of us on Sunday night managed to pull this together:
To be fair, Tyrese Gibson was not just a high-profile guest, but also the only black person at the con at all. Can't blame folks for making the association.
(Well, the only one except the awesome bus driver who inspired the "flames" sentence, anyway.)
The first sentence was referencing the panel with Tyrese, hosted by Aaron Archer, where Aaron Archer suddenly started talking street. Like, he traded in all his normal vocabulary for stuff like "dawg" and what have you. It was hilarious. Apparently you can't talk to Tyrese without talking LIKE him.
So, yeah, with that Paper Telephone sentence, the rest of us picked up on that.
It was originally a joke Graham made. Here's the story: Graham, Walky, Malin and I were on the same bus to the PARTY AT PARAMOUNT WOO, and our driver made announcements now and then over the PA. His delivery had this older-black-guy smoothness that at times just made his comments seem jovial and funny, and at other times added a bit of creepiness, especially when he chuckled.
On the funny side, there were comments like, "On your right you will see a body of water. Well, you won't really see it because it's nighttime, but we all have imaginations, now don't we?" And on the creepy side, there was the time he said, "I'm not sure how this happened, but you can see to our right the freeway we're supposed to be on. So we'll be going through Chinatown, heh heh heh heh heh heh heh."
And as we were, indeed, going through Chinatown, Graham made the surrounded-by-flames joke. Graham also spotted this place as we drove by it. Other good Graham-imitating-the-bus-driver commentary
