So about a month and a half ago I signed myself up to give a science talk here at the institute. I did it because I thought it'd be a good kick in the proverbial pants to get as much science done as possible. I figured I'd have my ultra snazzy code running in 2 weeks and I'd have most of my results at the end of last month. Funny how it never works ( Read more... )

Schedule a talk a week before vacation? I can beat that. I accepted a contract for a writing job that was due 3 days AFTER vacation - said vacation included a WorldCon - transportation to said world con included about a 2000 mile round trip drive. Needles to say - I did most of my research prior to leaving, printing out anything off the internet that looked like it MIGHT be pertinent, then writing in the evenings and early mornings. I made deadline - but I think the "vacation" part got lost in there somewhere.

Oh dear god.

You know what's bad is that my boss got that in email and was trying to find it for me. By just the description he gave me, I know it was that one.

*sniffs* Mark won't let me roast peeps on Sunday, he thinks it's morbid. Plus we lack a grill so I'd have to do it over the natural gas stove. . .

Go over to Kalapana anyway... it's worth it. We hiked it last year; I was there again in November. The biggest problem right now is the gas clouds that are closing the crater rim road just past the Jagger museum, and Chain O' Craters road is sort of on-again off-again...

And hey, Captain Cook isn't a total loss. My first snorkeling experience was there; my second was at the coves near Hapuna Beach...

Yeah last I checked Chain of Craters was closed. But I saw it spewed last night so we might be there for an interesting time. Just need to make sure to check that my national parks pass is in my wallet before we leave.

And yeah, Captain Cook shouldn't be too bad. We found a B&B to stay at and it's funny reading the reviews where people say nasty things and bitch about the inn owners because oh my god they were asked to take off their shoes and leave them at the door.
