I love the contrast between these two pieces, which is so characteristic of the two characters. Bill, who is so self-contained, sees all of Laura's brilliance in her self and in her self as it relates to him. Laura, who so tries to ignore her self and focus on everyone else, first sees all the color and variety of Bill in relation to people other than herself.
And I found it very interesting that each of them used Baltar as their first example!
You know, I love reading people's responses to my drabbles because so often, you spot things about them that I didn't even notice while writing them. I tend to write straight out without thinking too hard, and only later on realise themes that cropped up unintentionally or ways I've channelled the characters subconsciously. The Baltar thing wasn't planned, for example, yet I find it interesting too, now!
The quiet woman who walked onto his ship all that time ago to take part in the decommissioning ceremony be the same woman who had co-ordinated the resistance on New Caprica?
And here, this is wonderful, such a beautiful image at the end, too:
How could the ice queen President who keeps them all alive through her ruthlessness be the passionate lover who curls sensuously around him in his rack and kisses him so sweetly?
Striking imagery and a beautiful, insightful examination of both of these wonderfully complex characters. There is so much more to each of these people than initially meets the eye and their ability to see that in each other, their desire to look beyond the surface, fuels the richness of their relationship.
I'm not so good at telling stories. I find it much easier to write introspection and character exploration, so I try to make the imagery I use as interesting as possible so as to make each one different. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Such an interesting contrast. Although the diamond has all the colors, you're presenting it as very clear, while Bill's the obscure one with the dark depths. At first glance, Bill seems the 'simple' one while Laura has the complexity, but I think by season four, they'd definitely flipped in perspective. He was, in her words, a mess inside, while she was driven and hard-edged, sharp enough to cut.
Thank you! I really liked the idea when it struck me because it does work in multiple ways, I think. Opals are really soft stones, as well, and they get easily damaged if you knock them, just the way Bill does emotionally when something happens to hurt him. Whereas diamond is the toughest substance known to man, and it's so much harder to damage one. And I think that's Laura, who is far tougher and harder than Bill is, most of the time and generally deals with things by closing herself off and becoming sharper.
