Fic Preferences

Sep 16, 2010 14:20

Ok, so I was having a seriously ditzy day yesterday, posted this (or something like it), went back to edit something in it a bit later, and managed to stupidly delete it by accident. Cuz I'm dumb like that. So I'm reposting a version of it today in case anyone wants to respond ( Read more... )

rambling, tell me your thoughts, i'm dumb

Do you have a preference with regards to viewpoint? First person? Third person? Anything else?
I guess I tend to like 3rd person better; first is harder to truly pull off. But then, when someone does nail it, it's a thing of beauty.

Do you only read stuff from authors that you know or that are recommended to you, or will you give everything a chance?
I'll give anything a chance. If the title/summary has serious issues (capitalization, spelling, basic logic) I'll skip it, but otherwise, if it sounds like it could be good, I'll give it a shot.

What characters/pairings/settings/points in the timeline will make you definitely want to try something, or make you not want to read at all?
Two words: NEW CAPRICA! If there's an NC fic with Laura as a central, I want it. Aside from the obvious Laura & A/R, I'll also seek out Sammy/Kara. Anything else I don't really go looking for; if someone recs it, I'll give it a try, or if it's an author I know I like.

How much does bad spelling/grammar turn you off reading something?Completely. It's an ( ... )

New Caprica--check.

Angst whore--check.

Spelling/Grammar is important--check.

No babyfic--check.

It looks like we are very much in agreement on what we like. :)

Yeeeah, go us! Would that, then, make me conceited if I said you are a woman of impeccable taste? ;-)

Well, now I know that you have the same taste as some of my favorite peeps, so, no, not conceited at all. :)

I'm going to try to answer some of these--let's see how far I get. And LJ can be weird like that, so don't blame yourself too much for things going wonky.

What is is about a piece of fic that makes you enjoy or dislike it, usually?

I mainly read BSG fic, and 95% of that is Roslin/Adama. I think at this point what I really enjoy is when a writer can make me look at something in a slightly different way, when a writer gives me something new. (larsfarm77's recent "Irritable Hearts" would be a good example of this.

I enjoy deeper character pieces much more than things that are more plot driven or retellings (nothing wrong with those, they're just not always my cup of tea). I prefer things that remain in the canon universe, though I don't have anything against a good a/u, either.

If I don't enjoy an author's characterizations, I'll often stop reading.

Do you only read stuff from authors that you know or that are recommended to you, or will you give everything a chance?I'll give most new authors a chance, but for the most part I stick to ( ... )

Oops, I forgot the viewpoint question!

I prefer third person for the most part, though I have read good first person stories. I can't stand second person for the most part (though again, I remember reading one where this worked).

I get twitchy when an author shifts POV without intending to, i.e., is writing in Laura's POV and suddenly has something in there that's really Adama's. (I don't mind if the story shifts points of view on purpose--that's different.)

Ugh, yes. That always bugs me, when I think I'm reading a story from one character's point of view, and then suddenly there's a random paragraph from a different point of view. I get confused.

I hate second person too!

Yeah, I think fandom hits a point where all the obvious stuff has already been written, and that's when people start to drift away. It's the fic that takes new ideas or puts a new spin on old ideas that keeps everything going.

If I don't enjoy an author's characterizations, I'll often stop reading.

That's me, completely. I can manage to get over plots that don't make a lot of sense, or bad spelling to some extent, but if the characterisation isn't right for me, I don't see the point in reading the story.

Everyone loves New Caprica! :) It's seriously such a fascinating time in the series. I think partly because it can be so free and lighthearted, and so dark and horrifying, and gives us such a lot of scope for ideas.

I definitely prefer smut, but it has to be well written and work within the context of the story and for the characters. It can't just be something where I could change the names and I wouldn't ( ... )

LOL! I saw this the other day in passing, and went back later to reply, only to find it gone and thought I was going crazy. XD

Anyway:
I'm interested in people's preferences when it comes to fic, particularly BSG fic. What is is about a piece of fic that makes you enjoy or dislike it, usually?

I tend to love the BSG fics that plays with my head or the way I perceive the show or the characters on the show. I like complexity in fic though just as much as I enjoy fics that simply show an interpretation of a scene, or adds onto it, or a new scene altogether. Canon or AU, intense plot-line, or for me, an interesting character studies. I adore character studies. Stories that make me question or make me feel intensely are of course, favorites. :) In other words, I'm not particularly picky about the type of fic I read. Sometimes, it's all about the quality of the writing, sometimes it's the idea behind it, and sometimes, it's just the amazing people brought to life in it. The one thing I'll admit to not being too into is PWP. I enjoy it ( ... )
