Fic Preferences

Sep 16, 2010 14:20

Ok, so I was having a seriously ditzy day yesterday, posted this (or something like it), went back to edit something in it a bit later, and managed to stupidly delete it by accident. Cuz I'm dumb like that. So I'm reposting a version of it today in case anyone wants to respond ( Read more... )

rambling, tell me your thoughts, i'm dumb

LOL! I saw this the other day in passing, and went back later to reply, only to find it gone and thought I was going crazy. XD

Anyway:
I'm interested in people's preferences when it comes to fic, particularly BSG fic. What is is about a piece of fic that makes you enjoy or dislike it, usually?

I tend to love the BSG fics that plays with my head or the way I perceive the show or the characters on the show. I like complexity in fic though just as much as I enjoy fics that simply show an interpretation of a scene, or adds onto it, or a new scene altogether. Canon or AU, intense plot-line, or for me, an interesting character studies. I adore character studies. Stories that make me question or make me feel intensely are of course, favorites. :) In other words, I'm not particularly picky about the type of fic I read. Sometimes, it's all about the quality of the writing, sometimes it's the idea behind it, and sometimes, it's just the amazing people brought to life in it. The one thing I'll admit to not being too into is PWP. I enjoy it well enough when there's at least a sort of emotional attachment or deeper connection between the reader and what the writer is trying to convey beyond... well... *crickets chirping*

This and character assassinations. (^_^)"

Do you have a preference with regards to viewpoint? First person? Third person? Anything else?

Anything as long as it's well written. :) In fact, I tend to have a weakness for the POV that I think is the most difficult to write - the 2nd person POV (this is something I particular came across in the CSI fandom with a certain author's fics), because it's so direct. The "you" becomes very personal, and at times, I think it brings the reader into the character's consciousness even more deeply than 1st person.

Do you only read stuff from authors that you know or that are recommended to you, or will you give everything a chance?

I will give anything a chance. I basically read as my schedule (or lack of sleep) permits.

What characters/pairings/settings/points in the timeline will make you definitely want to try something, or make you not want to read at all? (I'm assuming Laura as a favourite character is a given, based on the preferences of my flist!)

Laura. Laura. Laura. XD I tend to be reluctant to read things that sound "smushy" for lack of a better word, and though I do not totally avoid baby-fic, I definitely go in with my eyes open and ready. And if it IS an author I am familiar with, then I tend to try things more outside of my comfort range more readily (re: characters, pairings).

(I offer another rec! :D For example, and I deliberately chose a non-Laura fic (not directly anyway) - http://k-julia.livejournal.com/55612.html - it makes me think of the way things could have always happened differently.)

How much does bad spelling/grammar turn you off reading something?

Can be quite a bit... I'll turn to skimming at times, or sometimes, give up, but then I'm not sure if I'm particularly critical of spelling/grammar.

What are your preferences with regards to crack vs serious fic? Fluff vs angst? Multipart vs one shots vs drabbles? Smut vs gen?

No preferences whatsoever outside of the elements of the story: writing quality, plot, characterization... etc.

Are there any types of fic you absolutely will not read, under any circumstances?

Not that I've come across so far. (Except RPF can make me feel highly uncomfortable sometimes when reading, but I still read...)
