There's a stage beyond the paralysis where hypnogogic hallucinations start, where you hear voices and begin to see things as though you're dreaming but awake. If you get caught up in them you'll either fall asleep or launch into a waking induced lucid dream (WILD). There's a point after that where it stops (I haven't reached it) and from there it's easier to get out. If you're more of a tactile person, you can imagine pulling yourself out of the body by climbing a rope.
I personally find the binaural beats helpful in that they create a feeling that is different from mundanity. They can help induce a spinning feeling, and when you have that, you could roll yourself out of the body or lift out of it.
But then again, I've never projected, so this is all just what others who have have said. Good luck though :D
They're like dreaming--not really much different at all, except sometimes it will sound like someone is talking next to you, which can startle you out of it sometimes.
Otherwise for me it's what happens when I'm really tired--swirls of colors and little lights opening up into scenes as it becomes a dream.
I've never been paralyzed, nor have I hallucinated, and I have projected many many times. I used to go up on the astral plane every night, not so much anymore, but that's a separate issue. All that to say, its different for everyone and its not like you have to go through all these steps to finally project. The first place to start is meditating - sometimes that's all it takes. I don't subscribe to the method of first your body gets paralyzed then you hear things (ringing etc) then you all of a sudden can project. Also, when I would be astral I could move my body, it just took more concentration to be in two places at once.

the binaural beats have never given me a full-on obe/astral but they're brought on lucid dreams & things i feel are related.
