"I will retract the above if they have Root start creepily trying to seduce an increasingly alarmed and wide-eyed Harold at the Machine's direction and the reason the Machine is talking to her and not him is because it wants to LOVE Harold through her as an intermediary. :P"
Hello! never commented on here before but the topic of this post was of great interest to me.
I was super annoyed by how they handled Shaw, actually. In particular how she never got any closure re:Carter. Elias gets to kill Simmons. Lionel takes Simmons down. Reese went on his roaring rampage of revenge. I wanted to see Shaw being sad about it and not knowing how to deal with emotions.
Those flashbacks seem to have one common theme; all of them showed a lack of empathy to some degree. Or maybe, it's more the ability to shut it down. (Except Finch but I'm staring to think Finch is the exception to every rule.)
As for the doctor thing, urgh yes. If you're a female doctor who shows emotions, you're hysterical and overemotional. Or worst, overly invested in your patients. If you don't, you're too cold. There was no way for Shaw to win.
Thanks for the warning about them using "Hurt" in the opening. It's been overused and often in a way that indicates the person who selected it hasn't listened to the lyrics. Muted it during that section.
I've decided the writers are trying to convey The Machine using all of them team as meat puppets, for lack of a better term. Their actions, as directed by The Machine represent various aspects of its "humanity" that it's trying out, but I'm not sure it realizes the majority of the meat puppets are able to shut off their humanity when necessary.
Is it bad that I got distracted trying to figure out where I'd seen the lead US Marshall instead of being intrigued by the plot itself? Turned out it was Richard Brooks, aka Jubal Early from FireflyI also liked seeing Elias again. Love the actor and how he has such a range in the various roles I've seen him in
