I just typed up a full page on my English test question. And then I realized: Holden didn't decide not to run away after the carousel incident. He decided not to run away in order to get Phoebe not to run away with him. I could maybe make a case for the idea that he didn't really plan on staying until after the carousel, but I don't know how much
