Asperger and I.Q.

May 12, 2009 08:56

OK, in order to be diagnosed with Asperger's someone has to have at least a normal to above average I.Q. I have heard that many geniuses like Franklin, Edison, and Einstein had some autistic traits. Maybe even da vinci too. I have thought that maybe in a sense, Asperger's is like a gift? The "disorder" can sometimes cause us to do some great ( Read more... )

I'm a gifted "NT." (NT in quotes just because I've heard that gifted people really aren't completely NT.)

the thing about all those online IQ tests is that you can NEVER trust them and they aren't real IQ tests at all.

I had a friend who majored in psychology and she learned that any real IQ test doesn't have words or math problems - they are all pictures - so any age and any ability can take them.

I've taken a psychometrics course, and that is true of some intelligence tests, but not the major IQ tests.

Ah, well, I still know that you can't trust any of the online quizzes. I did test for Mensa once - they didn't give me my score but I know I ALMOST scored enough because when they changed the rules (aka, they want members to get money) they kept bugging me to take another test or whatever it was that they did.

There are some non verbal IQ tests but the others all have words and math.

This is true. while IQ tests are neat, I think the multiple intelligences tests say a lot more. I think it's at mypersonality.info though I forget.

My parents are not convinced that intelligence can be measured. Here's all I know about mine. I took at least one IQ test in grade school (as I recall, it was a lot like a standard test with a lot of math problems, and I didn't finish), but my score was too low to qualify me for the state's gifted program. My parents fought to get me in, but to no avail. They won't tell me what the score was.

I do agree that online I.Q. tests are not usually accurate. I also do agree that intelligence isn't everything. We Aspies may have the IQ scores that are average to higher, and our AS gives us challenges.

I've never taken an IQ test, but from what I've seen of the sort of questions they ask, I have a feeling I wouldn't do well at all. It's just not my sort of thing. However, I did do very well academically.

I think the idea that there is a basic pure intelligence that can be measured and compared is probably false.
