I probably say, "thank you", if it's sincere. And 'sincere' here might simply be that I recognize some people might need that info and whether I do or not, I appreciate their attentiveness.

If it's not sincere, or if I really don't understand why I'm being told this info, then I tend to respond with something more like a drawn out "oookaaay." which is intended to both acknowledge that they've said something and also communicate that I don't know why they've offered it or what I'm supposed to do with that info.

If it's someone I know, work with, etc, then I'll just ask point blank - "What would you like me to do with this information?" or "Why are you telling me this now?"

A simple "Thank you" is almost always appropriate (and usually expected) in such a situation. This isn't just something that aspies have to learn, of course -- I've worked with many young people in academic settings who don't seem to know it either. :-)

i'm with you. whenever someone tries to explain random things to me that should be self-evident, i would just get all deer-in-headlights and find myself a bit disturbed.

we're supposed to say stuff?

i'm with john on this... "wow" works in a lot of places for me, as does "interesting" and "indeed".

oh, and smile and say thank you.
