For those who play video games or Dungeons and Dragons - do you get an odd thrill out of simply going over the strategy guides (for video games) and... what's the term... "expansion manuals" (for Dungeons and Dragons) that's almost as strong as the game itself? I don't play D&D (just read the manuals) but I notice this oddity. Is it just me, or is ( Read more... )

"reading the manuals was sometimes more interesting than playing the actual game."

Amen! :D

Maybe a little bit. I used to get a lot more excited about video game guides. I bought Pokemon games along with the accompanying strategy guide. Since I started playing serious RPGs, though, I may flip through a guide to kinda preview what the game is like. I rather wait to get it until after I finish the game. Otherwise, I just feel kinda sheepish that I need one just to get through the game. Sometimes I might glance through walkthroughs online when I'm stuck.

I love going over the video game guides, but then, I love playing the games too...

And I am a big D&D geek... I like the math in it... which is why you see me on the "Character Optimization" boards, they are an Aspie's dream, as far as D&D goes! You should check it out!

Definitely. I still have a bunch of old guide books for D&D, White Wolf, and a bunch of other RTS and RPG manuals. I can get lost in them for hours.

"I can get lost in them for hours."

*glances at Elder Evils handbook* Agreed. XD

Do you find there are certain topics that interest you more than others? For example, the administrative rules didn't interest me so much as the world rules. I could read a book about elvish society and perspective for hours; the same for a town description or a vampire clan.

Absolutely! I think I got into fantasy roleplaying as much because I liked reading the manuals as because I liked playing the games. I also found it fun to make my own RPG system, which my friends and I are currently using, out of scraps of others which I knew well but only liked pieces of. :)
