Nikki Bacharach

This post is about the public dis-information that is allowed to propagate about Asperger's Syndrome. The topic is Nikki Bacharach, an aspie who died in January at 40 years old, and was the daughter of former model and tv actress Angie Dickinson. It's long and potentially triggering (because her life was not such a happy one), so is behind a cut. ( Read more... )

Huh, I've been diagnosed for 6 years and my brain isn't ravaged in any way. Should it be? Am I missing something?

(This was entirely being facetious, by the way)

They likely put 'disease' first and then corrected it to 'disorder' so as not to sound nearly as aggresively ignorant. The implied definition certainly holds more with that of disease.

Anyway, I agree, getting locked away for 10 years would mess somebody up a great deal more than having Asperger's ever could. Perceived parental rejection on that scale sticks with someone for a long time and affects them in more ways than what are immediately distinguishable, regardless of the "rejected" person's mental condition.

I'm honestly not surprised by the ignorance surrounding this whole thing, but I am disappointed. Nobody makes an effort to learn more about AS in an age when everybody's trying to be more politically correct.

Yeah, agreed for the most part. I DO consider Asperger's a disorder rather than simply a difference, but this article paints it in a really inaccurate way. And it is definitely true that locking the girl up for 10 years would screw her up profoundly even if she was neurotypical; the only valid reason to put someone in a psych hospital for that long is if they'd be a danger to themselves or others if let out.

No, that's ravishing. I'll use them in a sentence:

"Ravaged by Asperger's Disorder, my brain can't stop noticing little things like substituting ravaging for ravishing.

I'm glad I don't attempt, or let others persuade me to "battle" my own brain. But yes, I'm sure it was the trauma brought on by her parents and other's mistreatment which ultimately caused her to commit suicide.
