daycare question

I am totally stuck right now... I really dislike the way food is being handled in Dora's daycare. We give her home cooked food and snacks, but whenever there is a birthday party, she ends up eating horrible cupcakes and junk like that. Plus, she sees other kids eating Oreo!!!! cookies and, of course, wants it too. Sometimes i come to pick her up ( Read more... )

they have aftercare. Our daycare has classes for up to/including kindergarten and are open from 7am to 6pm.

you clearly are not happy with the daycare situation - so pull her and don't second guess yourself! :) you know better what is best for your kids.

That's the thing.. Overall, i am happy with the place. Dora loves.. i mean LOVES going there. I think i will give it some time, though will definitely check out what else is available. I have no idea what will happen with my job search, so if we will switch Dora to another daycare, i will do so after i find another job.... probably.. I just don't know :(

I hear you. Don't loose sleep over it. Sheltering Dora from junk food is not the most important part of her upbringing ;)

I personally like montessori ideas for kids.

I also like that our preschool discourages parents from giving kids sweets for lunch. That said, those kids still get a lot of what I wouldn't feed my children. Plus my kids see some of their friends eating sweets we don't have at home. My attitude is fairly relaxed: it's fine for them to eat such things elsewhere (e.g. for birthday parties or when we are visiting), so long as they know why we don't have them at home.

I guess i need to work more with Dora. Like today, she had some pretzels for snack, but promised me that she will eat it with an apple..and she did. I also spoke to her teacher and she said that she herself pushes parents to bring healthier snacks. I guess we will give it some more time as my life is full of uncertainty as it is. We will definitely though checkout other preschools..just to know what else is available in the area.

Don't try to be a food Nazi... it will backfire. I tell Anat it's OK to have some junk, but very little and occasionally. She understands the concept, even though she still eats candy, but she doesn't eat it as much as other kids. Believe me, if you make a big deal out of it, it will be even worse rather than teaching her that this is what we do in our family because of *insert your reasons here*.

Oh i totally agree and i don't make this big deal out of it. If other kids in class are eating those damn cupcakes, i will not take it away from her... she eats it too.

I just want to limit it as much as possible.

How did you explain to her that one candy is enough?

Nu, I dunno, you just tell her. :) I tell her it's not good for her teeth or something. My child is a tooth freak. She loves going to the dentist and making sure her teeth are healthy :). Another thing you may want to consider is providing your own desert, and it may occasionally involve candy :). For example, Anat loves desert and eats it often. But instead of Twizzlers you can make sure she eats some good ice cream or quality chocolate. I think what's important is to teach her that desert is there for her if she wants it, but she can only have a certain amount. Which means that if she eats crap in daycare - she doesn't get desert at home :).

Right.. that's why we've been providing her with our own desert. I have NO problem with her eating cakes, but the ones i make :)))

They have ice cream days... Instead of her getting ice cream from those ice cream trucks, i got it for her from farmer's market.. home made with only 3!!!! ingredients :)))

ALL my life i've been fighting with weight and i really want Dora to avoid it...

I have a qualified recomendation for Montessori schools. Not all Montessori schools are created equal. They're supposed to be based on the theories of Maria Montessori, but how those theories are implemented varies quite a bit from school to school and even from teacher to teacher in the same school. What they tell you in the office is often quite different from how things play out in the classroom ( ... )
