Yesterday I had a pretty uncomfortable plane trip due to the people sitting in front of me not only fully reclining their seats (even when they were sitting straight to eat) but also making sure those chairs wouldn't stay still for a second ( Read more... )

I'm not sure I've ever reclined my seat in a plane, come to think of it...

Granted, I'm also generally small enough to find airline seats in coach pretty comfortable as they are.

This.

I think I did once when I was really uncomfortable because the person in front of me had theirs all the way back. But that's it.

Honestly, they don't go back far enough for me to even really notice a difference in comfort.

I'm not small but I wouldn't recline my seat either way.

I don't recline, but like tediousandbrief, I don't have a problem with being uncomfortable in airline seats. If I want to sleep, I'll usually just bend at the waist and sleep in my legs, as long as the person in front of me isn't reclined.

You'll be possibly amused to know I have just tried this sleeping technique since at first it wasn't readily apparent as to how that would be remotely possible or comfortable.

After I tried it, it's still not in the slightest bit obvious how that works :P

Good to know you're flexible though.

Edit: I now have a stomach ache.

Well, I'm not very tall, to begin with, so my head doesn't hit the seat in front of me or anything. Then, there's that I like to sleep curled up, and I'm flexible. I would be more comfortable with slightly more space to put my feet up almost under myself, only to the side a bit. Basically, my head winds up near my knees and I use my arms as a pillow.

Reclining during meal time is right out. Beyond that, I try to match the reclining state of the person behind me. If they're reclining, I'm reclining. It can kind of turn into a big game of chicken because someone has to be the first to recline. I might recline mine a centimetre or two to passive-aggressively plant the idea in their head, like "oh, have you thought about reclining? You should try it!". If they don't take the bait I just keep my chair straight though :(

I usually recline a little bit if there's someone behind me, because after about 20 minutes without being able to stretch my legs, my knees will start hurting like crazy, so on an 8 hour plane trip that gets annoying real quick.

Everyone has the right to recline. Sorry.

So you have the right to increase your level of comfort by decreasing the comfort of someone sitting behind you?
Say sitting straight is a comfort level of 0. Reclining will get you to +1, but will put the other person at -1.
You're ok with that?

Yep, I'm OK with that. No one ever said coach seating was comfortable. If you want leg room, buy first-class. Otherwise suck it up. Plus, the seats *barely* recline. It's not that big a deal.

My problem isn't leg room. It's having someone else's seat shoved into my face. It depends on the plane or the bus, and I've situations when it wasn't as uncomfortable, but this time I couldn't even open my laptop on my lap.
