Darn it all to heck!

Yesterday I went to my aunt's place with my laptop in a bag. When I went to turn it on it was screwed up. The screen won't turn on. The light on the caps lock button keeps flashing and the light that indicates whether the WiFi signal is connected shows it's not ( Read more... )

Look at the link Flagg posted - the flashy light on your capslock is probably going to tell you the problem. Hope it turns out okay :)

I wish I could back it up but with the screen out I can't.

Well you could hook it up to a tv or another external monitor. You say it "never worked right" but might it work well enough to at least transfer data.
I've also had mine backed up by popping out the hard drive and connecting it to another computer. However, I wouldn't recommend doing this on your own. It isn't super hard to do (the external hard drive I use now is just the old hard drive to my monitor-fried laptop) but its better to have someone who knows how to do it try.

I just tried that and got "No Signal" on the TV.

I plan on contacting a friend who knows how to fix computers to see if he can help.

First, back up your hard drive. If the screen won't turn on, try hooking up an external monitor or television to see if you can get an image on one of those. Try the basic troubleshooting (take the battery out and make sure it's fully powered down, blah blah blah). Your best shot is to probably have a computer savvy friend physically look at it our pay to have someone else look at it. If the screen isn't turning on, someone's going to have to take it apart & see what's happening in there.

What's the brand/model of the laptop?

I've tried a few times years ago to hook it up to my TV but it never worked right. I do have the system backed up from a year ago and a few files about a month ago.

Tomorrow I'm going to call a friend I know who fixes computers to see if he can help. I just didn't want to bother him if I didn't have to.

It's an HP Pavilion.

There should be stickers on the bottom telling you more specific info. As stated before, that doesn't really tell anything. That's like saying 'It's a Ford.'

The stickers on the bottom are too faded to read. However I did find a model number under the battery. Model # G62-435DX.

Does it show any image at all when turning on? Can you hear the windows sound or any system sound at all? Does it show anything if you plug it to an external monitor?

No, no image at all. When I first turn it on I can hear the hard drive starting up as usual but after that the only sound in the fan. When I first got this laptop I tried hooking it up to my TV but it didn't work then. I'll give it another try.

You need special software and parts to connect it to a tv. Plug it to a computer monitor. If nothing shows up it's likely the problem is the graphics card, if it does show, it means that either the part (which name I don't remember) that connects the laptop screen to the rest of the system is damaged or the screen itself. Either way, you're probably looking at upwards of 150$ in repairs.

I have the right cable for it. My old laptop would connect no problem. But with this one all I've ever gotten is "No Signal" when I try to connect it.
