Death with Dignity

On Tuesday, one of the questions Massachusetts will be voting on in Question 2, better known as the Death with Dignity initiative.

Basically, it will allow adults who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and told they have 6 months or less to live to make a request with their physician to be prescribed a life ending medication. A summary of ( Read more... )

I would most certainly support it. We put animals to sleep to end their suffering -- why would you be against extending that kindness to our own species? That's just cruel.

I imagine the "against" people argue that mere people (doctors) should not have that right because it's up to God or whatever.

I see people die all the time, and have had them ask me to help them to die. But we can't. The theories of hospice care are that we stop the suffering and the symptoms as best we can to extend quality and not quantity of life. But we're not perfect, and sometimes, people do suffer. Families ask, too, and all we can say is "we will do our best to keep them comfortable." Sometimes, our best isn't enough, though ( ... )
