On Tuesday, one of the questions Massachusetts will be voting on in Question 2, better known as the Death with Dignity initiative.

Basically, it will allow adults who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and told they have 6 months or less to live to make a request with their physician to be prescribed a life ending medication. A summary of ( Read more... )

i agree. the thing i kept trying to tell my friend was that just because he doesn't believe in it, doesn't make it ok for him to take the choice away from other people who do.

he thinks that there's no way that doctors can always know that you only have 6 months to live, and that people shouldn't make the decision to end their lives early when 2 doctors who could be wrong say that they're going to die if there's a chance they could live for a year or however much longer than their 6 month diagnosis. he also thinks that it's a selfish decision because you're taking away precious time family members could have with you ,and he doesn't like that you're not required to notify a next of kin of your decision, it's only recommended. he also doesn't like that you're not required to see a psychologist first because "MDs aren't qualified enough to be able to tell if you have an underlying mental illness that would influence a decision to end your life early" (if a doctor questions your mental state they can refer you to a psychologist and have you get the all clear before they prescribe it). and he doesn't like that a physician isn't required to be there since "people are dumb" and might screw up taking the ( ... )

I will never understand why someone wouldn't support the right for a person to end their suffering on their own terms. Never.

I would support it. It has some parallels to abortion to me. While I don't necessarily support people killing themselves, I don't feel like I or the government have any moral authority to prevent someone from doing it. It's naturally their choice to make.

exactly. i tried to tell my friend this. he didn't see the correlation. he supports the right to choose abortion (he told me that there are circumstances of abortion he doesn't agree with but he didn't think it should be illegal) and yet he doesn't see how it's the same with this. being pro choice doesn't necessarily make you pro assisted suicide or pro abortion.
