How do you steam veggies so they don't come out limp and total mush? I even bought a veggie stove top steamer and they came out mushy. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Frustrated....

how to, cooking

You're steaming them for too long.

Do you have one of the little basket-type veggie steamers that you put into a sauce pan? That's what I use.

Basically, put just enough water into the pan to come up to the bottom of the steamer basket. Add veggies. Put the lid on the pan. Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes. Do not open the lid on the pan while cooking - keep all that steam inside.

It really only takes a couple of minutes to steam them - perhaps you're cooking them too long?

Yes, that's what I've been using. I let it come to a good boil because I like my veggies more tender, just not mush. But I can't seem to catch just the right time when they're perfect.

Try a lower heat and only do a simmer on the water, I think. And then you can leave them a touch longer.

You are cooking them way too long if they are coming out mushy. I use a double boiler and it takes just a few minutes to steam veggies.

As everyone else has said, you're just steaming them for too long. They don't take long to cook, veggies.
