Urban Legends (not the movie)

I'm a huge fan of urban legends. What are some of your favorites or ones that just freak you out?  The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs (www.snopes.com/horrors/madmen/babysit.asp) sends chills down my spine.

horror stories, fears, myths

The one where the roommate is dying in the next bed. I can't even look it up because I'm going to try to sleep soon.

That one is freaky too. I think anyone involving batshit crazy murderers freak me out the most.

I did a summer term class in college called Ancient Myths & Modern Legends. I learned within the first couple days not to read the Urban Legends readings before bed.

The one that stuck with me most is where you stick your finger in the coin return slot of a pay phone/vending machine and feel a pin prick. You investigate and see a pin in there with a little note that says "congratulations! You have HIV!"

I guess there are other version of it.

Why should intelligence make so much of a difference as far as passing on urban legends? Some may be obviously untrue, but strange and sometimes awful things do happen every day, and even the most skeptical among us want to know about them. Automatically giving something credence with no backing is silly, but so is automatically dismissing it.

This terrifies me. I can no longer stand next to parked cars like a normal person.
If I have to unlock a car, I kind of lean forward to unlock the door (with my precious feet a ridiculous length away from the car itself), swing open the door and jump in. If, for some reason, I can't distance myself enough to feel safe, I kind of march in place, so that at least my feet will be harder to grab and cut.

Is that weird?

I Still check the backseat of my car before I get in if it makes you feel better. Different legend, I know. Still scary.

Oh god yep. Having my Achilles tendon cut is just shudder-y horrifying to me, totally awful. I'm paranoid about that even though I know it's pretty unlikely. I always check the backseat too. UGH.
