I don't "go ballistic". I freak the fuck out. They are two very different emotions.

When Jack goes ballistic, he bites his lip and his eyes tear up. (This is after he hollers.)

When he freaks the fuck out, he throws things and his pupils dilate.

So really, best way to tell is to check the eyes (if you can get him to hold still while he's cycling his emotions).
