Benny’s van had been a presence in Tab’s life since she was seventeen. It bore an eerie resemblance to the Mystery Machine, and sometimes Tab wondered if Benny’s reluctance to let the old girl go wasn’t due to his Scooby Doo obsession. While Tab didn’t drive often, or have her own care, she didn’t exactly lack automotive knowledge. The reason why she was so apt at keeping Benny’s van going was because Benny himself had never taken to mechanics. He’d left it up to the petite redhead, who as his best friend and frequent passenger, had a vested interest in making sure the heap stayed roadworthy. Of course, it helped when Benny told her something was wrong with it. Tab wasn’t exactly in the habit of dropping by and carrying out on the spot maintenance checks.

She’d convinced the blond drummer to hand over his keys by promising a movie night and some best friend bonding time, even agreeing to the Scooby Doo marathon he was apparently already planning. Tab drove through the streets of New York, and tried to be as careful as possible. Her mind kept straying to Riley’s phone call and she frowned. The fact that he was so concerned about her dying would do nothing to help him deal with the last couple of weeks before his test. She thought he’d be better if he just took care of himself, but even meeting this Evie wasn’t helping to distract him.

She turned down 2nd Avenue and as she crossed over East 14th Street, Tab didn’t even notice that one of the cars had disobeyed the traffic signal, and was heading straight towards her. Before she could slam down the breaks or even put her foot down on the accelerator to try and least get out of the way. The van rocked with the impact, the sound of metal bending against its will filled her ears, and then everything was black.
