Title: Se divisi fummo in terra…
Summary: Sequel to " Not Much, No" requested by laurtew. :)
Rating: PG for super sad stuff
Spoilers: Reichenbach Falls.
Pairing: S/J if you read it that way.  Pre-slash-type stuff.

John couldn't say that he didn't expect Mycroft to visit, but he didn't think he'd bring anything with him but awkwardly sympathetic words.  Any words of the sort were entirely missing - a package in their place.

"What's this?" John asked.

"A copy of Sherlock's will.  And a video I think you would be interested in."

"Please tell me it's Sherlock dressed as a pirate."  John had gone from accepting the grimness to being so desperate that he was making jokes just to break the tension.  It worked for him, but Mycroft seemed unfazed.

"Something a bit more important.  Candid and, I'd like to think, open.  More open than he could have been with any of us were we present.  I'll leave you to watch on your own."

Mycroft didn't wait for a farewell or dismissal of any sort to leave, leaving John feeling utterly alone.

The flat had had a sense of emptiness since Sherlock left (he refused to say "died").  John rarely turned off the telly and radio just trying to chase away the silence.  Now, though, the only sound was the whirring of the old tape player as it started the film.

"Your only three friends in the world…"
Sherlock had said John's name first.

I don't have friends.  Sherlock had once claimed.

A colleague?  How do you get a colleague?  Sally still seemed surprised long after John and Sherlock had teamed up.

Should I expect a happy announcement soon? That had just been sarcasm.

Sherlock had said John's name first.

"Unless I kill myself.  Complete your story."
So he was lying when he told John that he was a fake.  He was fulfilling what he had to do to save them.  To save him.

"You've gotta admit that's sexier."
And, suddenly, rage boiled in John's gut.  Not because of the lightness of the comment nor because of how Moriarty's willingness to toy with death.  No… it was because he was flirting with Sherlock.

John swallowed thickly, reminding himself that he was likely being watched.  Now wasn't the time for an outburst.  And, as he continually reminded everyone, they weren't a couple.  The flirting bothered him because he knew it was for all the wrong reasons.  And was directed at his best friend.

He forced himself to continue watching barely containing himself when Moriarty shot himself.  Then, came the part he knew - the note.

He couldn't keep a single tear from falling from his right eye.  He wiped it away quickly, shutting off the tape before Sherlock jumped.  He couldn't live through that again.  Not now that he understood what had really happened.

And he was angry.  He was sad.  He was grateful.  He was so many things he couldn't put a name to.  He turned the radio on again, the voice of an operatic tenor filling the void, and pulled the will out of the envelope that the tape came in.  Surprisingly, it was only two sheets.

Last Will and Testament of
Sherlock Holmes
I, Sherlock Holmes, of 221B Baker Street, London, declare that this is my Last Will and Testament.

Article I
Preliminary Declarations
I revoke all prior wills and codicils.

I am unmarried and have sired no children.  I share a residence with John H. Watson.

Article 2
Specific Bequests and DevisesI give any and all property that is in my name to John H. Watson.  If said devisee fails to survive me, then this gift will lapse and all property will be sold.

From there, it was just legalities - the date and the witnesses (Mycroft and a Violet Holmes).

Any and all property.  John could hardly believe it.  Sherlock left everything to him.  Everything.

John sat on the couch where the detective had so often draped himself and clutched the Union Jack pillow to his chest.  Sod the surveillance - he was entitled to a cry.

"When I see you again," John thought, but he never finished it.  He wasn't sure what he'd do.

But he knew he would see Sherlock again.

A/N: The title, as ever, is based on a song.  The aria is "Tu che a Dio spiegasti" from Lucia di Lammermoor.  The full phrase is "se divisi fummo in terra, ne congiunga il Nume in ciel." which translates to (approximately) "If we're divided on earth, God will join us in heaven."  I thought it was an appropriate sentiment. :)

And a big thanks to Laura!  This was like a mini-prompt!  Can't wait to see your version! :D
