I feel your pain... I've been trying to help my mom find a job and it's so frustrating. She's a medical assistant and supposedly there is a HUGE demand for health care workers, but there is NOTHING out there. I think a lot of places hire exclusively on a referral basis these days, so you need to "know someone" to land an interview. *sigh*
Maybe try applying for a census taker job? And you could also look for internships or volunteer work in the meantime. Even if it's unpaid, it will at least look good on your resume and sometimes you get to know people through interning/volunteering who can help you find a real, cash-paying job...
A census job is a GREAT idea. My dad finally got a job with the census after looking for work for a little over a year. He really enjoys it, and only had to work second shift for about two months before moving onto first. Plus, government jobs tend to be really, really hard to lose. Much love, BB.
That's really unfortunate. You'd think that medical assisting would be a done deal. I'm really sorry to hear that.
He's already applied to the census and hasn't heard anything. :\ I think his sister was working on trying to get him an internship or something like that at some kind of movie place (his BA is in Cinema) but she's also having financial troubles so she may have put her hookups aside (which I understand).
Fo reals though, I would think about moving out of California. The whole state is a mess. If Mike wants a grown up job (like teaching) they are hiring about everywhere BUT California. If he doesn't want a grown up job, its not hard to get hired out here doing retail and stuff like that at all. Not to mention, the cost of living is so much cheaper I can't even tell you. (my 900 sqft, 2br/1.5 bth townhouse with water, electric, cable, internet, and gas will cost me about $750-800 in rent a month). I love California, but I doubt i'll ever live there again.
Also, don't put all of the eggs in the TFA basket, its a great program, yes, but it's also really, really, really hard to get accepted to. I hope that he does (they will pay for more school) but be prepared to potentially move with that one, too (a la Lauren to NYC).
Sorry if I come off as a total downer, but I feel like I have a bit of insight and i'm really just trying to help.
I feel pretty silly even asking this, but has he been borderline asshole calling people back to "check on the status of my application?" I only ask because I recently got a couple of interviews that I only got because I called before they told me to. Of course, I'm still not employed yet but it's a step in the right direction.
Good luck you guys, I definetely have a feel for how shitty it is out there these days =(

It sucks everywhere, but CA is one of the worst.
top 5 highest unemployment by state:
Michigan: 14.6%
Nevada: 13%
Rhode Island: 12.9%
South Carolina: 12.6%
California: 12.4%
Yuck carrots.
