I may have forgotten how to do this...

It seems appropriate to pop back after a long absence to write up a few thoughts about the final episode. :)

I'm so pleased you came back for the finale! I've missed seeing you here. And I concur with everything you say about the episode, including Dean's death. It was fitting that it was just an ordinary hunt. That was always the true vocation: saving people, hunting things, the family business. As for the rest (whatever the plural of apocalypse is) they were just epic distractions that their enemies threw in their paths to keep them from doing their true work. Dean died doing what he loved. It was fitting, too, that no monster could claim a victory over him: the vampire didn't really kill him, his death was almost accidental. But those that complained it wasn't heroic really miss the point, I think. Dean died on his feet, with a spike rammed through him. And all through his speech to Sam he was in abject agony, but he kept fighting, to stay alive long enough so he could tell Sam how he truly felt. Expressing his true feelings was always Dean's greatest battle, and it was wonderful to see he'd grown to the point where he finally won that ( ... )

This so much. What more could you ask? He was stoic in the face of pain and suffering, he was afraid and was able to say so, he held his brother and told him he loved him and was proud. It was a hero's end - like Theoden or Borromir in LOTR.

My question, is of course, rhetorical. I know what those people were asking for - they wanted that scene to have been between Dean and Castiel and they are going to be forever bitter that they didn't get it.

I have to wonder if that long pause between "it was always you . . . and me" was scripted, or Jensen's acting choice. Either way, it was so obviously a statement to the Destiel fans that, no, it was never about Castiel or anyone else for that matter. As the Greeks would have put it: Sam was always Dean's poly philtatos, "most loved by far". As he was Sam's.

He was - they were - and that's what made the show compelling from the start.

Oh lord, I'm welling up again.

So lovely to see a post from you, ash! I agree with everything you said.
The thing I liked about this finale was that you didn't need to be caught up, it stands on its own.
In S15 I recommend "the gamblers" and also 15.19. (the season near the end is glorious) ❤️

yes! And don't, don't, don't watch Heroes Journey. It's still the only SPN episode to make me genuinely, deeply angry.

(sneaking in to second this. I wish I hadn't.)

I wish I hadn't. I'm still angry about it. It was the first (and only) time watching the show when I felt the writers had nothing but contempt for us, the audience.

Aw, so grateful to you for this. I miss your reviews! I’ve been seeing a lot of former fans coming back just to say goodbye to the show that used to mean so much to them, and it means a lot to THIS fan to see that. You were always one of my favorite fan content-providers. Best to you in all you do!

Thank you so much! I hang around twitter mostly, but I rarely tweet (maybe the odd political one). I miss the LJ days - it truly is the best place for good discussions and just such a positive space. xx

Thank you! You have articulated all my thoughts and feelings about the episode so beautifully.

I too, have struggled to understand the criticisms around Dean's death. He rescued the children, he defeated the bad guys and then he died in a tragic accident. For me, it is no different to, say, a fire fighter rescuing children from a burning building and then being hit and killed by a falling piece of burning timber. He died in the line of duty. What's not heroic about that?

Yes! Dean is a hero and he definitely died as one. His death hurt SO MUCH - which is testament to how much we love this character. We were all Sam during that - crying for our loss. But it was also beautiful - filled with love and care. An amazing scene. x

Have missed you.

Glad you found the end satisfying. I wish I could stop crying over Sam being alone...

Oh I hear you. I don't think I stopped crying after Dean's death. Sam's loneliness and loss. But I was also proud of his strength. All the pain he's suffered throughout the series has prepared him for this. To carry on. To not give up (when he so easily could). I felt it mirrored JAred's strength also. His Always Keep Fighting was important here also. He still have connections to Dean and I believe he knew Dean would be watching him live a life. Actually, still so much to unpack here...xx
