Yes, I agree with you on the way they ended it. I've always loved Sam and Dean, of course, but to see that they've grown, matured, and changed for the better was a payoff even more rewarding than I would have expected.
How lovely to see you here and writing about the show again. I agree (HARD!) with every word you've said here. I'm so frustrated with the self inflicted disappointment certain quarters of fandom are shouting about - because they never understood the show, and spent years trying to make it be something else. It's no wonder they were disappointed because it was never about anything other than this. Sam and Dean Winchester, and their unbreakable bond.
I love that after so many seasons where proving their bond wouldn't be broken by death meant denying death's grip on each other, in the end, moved into letting each other go. And of course, the reunion in the heaven that they had effectively created, that was just perfect.

It's nice to be back on here actually. It's so much easier to have civilised discussions. I was going to attempt a thread on Twitter, but this space is so much better for friendly connections and chat.:)
The anger and vitriol that a section of fandom has thrown at actors and creators have been awful. I understand their disappointment (in fact, I felt Cas had an unworthy departure. I didn't really understand it (the empty took him?). Jack had a very worthy departure in comparison. I know many had a huge investment in something that was never going to happen (though even I wasn't sure. Which is why I had to wait to see what they did with the finally). Attacking actors is unacceptable though as they have nothing to do with the scripts. I suppose I'm just happy to be on the happy side of fandom - and that Show remained true to the original story and themes.
Twitter (and Tumblr) has been even more of a shit show than usual since the finale - I actually understand their disappointment but my sympathy has been extinguished by the awful behaviour. Driving poor old Jim Beaver off Twitter because Bobby appeared in the finale and Cas didn't? Unforgivable.
Hiiiiii! One of the best things about the finale has been the return of folks I haven't seen in a while. :)
I agree with pretty much everything you said! I remain a little annoyed about the obviousness of Chekhov's rebar, but OTOH, I'm pleased that no monster can say they were the one to kill Dean Winchester. And I love what you said about no deals being carried on; it's left wide open as to how much Sam told his son about hunting, but I would imagine he told him that much, and not to do it. Good catch!

It's lovely! I can't believe all these lovely familiar faces still here! It took that lovely finale to bring some of us back. :)

Oh yes! That's something I didn't think of. No one can go around boasting about that. It's funny, when they showed that rebar sticking out I was sure it was for one of the vamps. I had no idea it was there for Dean (I was spoiled that one of them died, but I thought it was Sam so I was totally not expecting it).
I feel the end has left a lot for some great fanfic... :)
Hi there! What a lovely post! I agree with you about Dean's death. It was perfect. Goodness knows Sam and Dean had gone out with a burst of glory too many times to count! Especially Dean.
That death scene was so...knowing that it was also Jensen and Jared saying goodbye to Sam and Dean...and Jared was just LOSING IT. I cried really hard.
Twitter was an absolutely dumpster fire that night. I'm so glad I could come here and read sane people's reactions.
I think I have cultivated my Twitter follows so I initially didn't see much of the negativity. It was only when people started posting reactions to what was being said (and I checked out some comments *mistake*) that I realised the hatred for the episode. It's so weird that - aside from no destiel - the main complaint seems to be Dean's death and lack of his character growth. His growth being (I think!) that he would accept his love for Cas and ride off into the sunset with him. I think both characters have developed - as much as they can with this style of show - over the many years. Their strength, and acceptance of the amazing work they had done, was satisfying for me.
Most of my Twitter follows are pretty okay but there was a lot of arguing, retweeting, etc. I didn't go on Tumblr for a few days, although the Sam Winchester Appreciation Society posted a lot of lovely stuff about the episode.
I liked Dean's death. It was the kind of accident a hunter would have. How many times have they had Big Honking Deaths in this show?
I totally agree about the finale. I'd been so scared that they'd screw it up but, they didn't. Dean went out doing the job he loved, knowing they'd saved the kids and beat the bad guys one last time. He had time to say goodbye, to tell his baby brother he loved him, to hear him say it was okay. The thought of Sam having all those years without Dean by his side truly hurt but he also used that time to built a life, raise his son.
The last scene on the bridge was beautiful, too. They'd truly come full circle, in the Heaven they'd helped make possible. It was so much more than I'd ever hoped for.

First, hi! It's good to see you!

in the Heaven they'd helped make possible.
Oh yes! Of course - I hadn't thought about that. Heaven was so - um, regimented and bureaucratic before. Not a place Sam and Dean would deserve.
Great episodes ( I just watched it again and wow, still incredibly powerful and emotional).
