picspam: gauri in lagaan: once upon a time in india
for challenge #12 @ picspammy: color focus
What is Lagaan? It's a charming (and charmingly long) Bollywood film that came out in 2001. You can read more about it here. I saw this film as part of a European Studies class (... don't ask), and I was struck by the beauty and scope of the film.
The offical description of the film is as follows:
The movie is set in the Victorian period of the British Raj and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers put forth a proposition to the peasants. One senior officer offers to cancel their taxes for three years if their village team beats him at cricket. After accepting his proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village's destiny.
I would totally encourage you to find and watch this movie if you are at all interested in seeing a fun and entertaining movie. And if you need more reasons: 1. The music for this film was done by A.H. Rahman, who did the music a=fro Slumdog Millionaire; 2. One of the British characters is played by Paul Blackthorne of The Dresden Files. And it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
I chose to picspam the character of Gauri, played by Gracy Singh. While nearly all the female characters wear bright colorful outfits, Gauri's left the greatest impression on me. And the film nerd in me compares her bright and vibrant outfits to the drab and colorless outfits of her sometimes-rival.
There are what might be construed as some general spoilers in this spam. Nothing film ruining, but just know that the spam covers the whole film, so if you're super-sensitive...
