it's not my fault, it's how i'm programmed to function

Backtracking a bit… Van's party was fantastic. Had a great time talking to Neil and Brian (back when he had an appendix), Ray, Kiat and Blake. And of course my ex, the birthday lad, will *fingers crossed* soon be working in the environmental world. A good way for him to rejoin the working gays.

I have to stop wearing my grey zippy everywhere, but ( Read more... )

i adore avedon. did you go to his big show at the met while we were still at emerson? it was so great. i was just like...staring intensely into carson mccullers's huge eyes and wanted to die.

while i enjoy the subject of this entry, it entirely reminds me of jessica rabbit's declaration, "i'm not bad, i'm just drawn that way."

i don't like a&f guys because they're hot white guys, i like them because they look like the guys who were around when i was accepting i was gay and had a crush on.

<---is insulted with all the suggestions that gay "culture" is racist, as if a unified gay culture exists.

i agree with you. i think that's fairly ridiculous. you can't say that straights do that ... and it's true, while there are many sects of gay culture, the only true unifying factor is sexual orientation.

I don't associate the whole Abercrombie thing with gays. There certainly is a group of gay people who view that image as the ideal, and that same group often likes to think of itself as the core or mainstream gays. But, I don't agree. In my experience, the "gay world" is much more diverse than that.

There certainly is some dating racism. The biggest racial fetish, after all, is white guys who only like white guys. But I don't think it's any more so than anywhere else.

there was a study a few years ago claiming that you tend to be drawn to be who are genetically closest to yourself. i don't know if i totally believe it, but it could explain things. i don't know that it's necessarily true of anyone i know, but it's an interesting thought.

I'd have to see the details of that study. Genetics, ethnicities and cultures are still so intertwined and will be for the next couple centuries, it would be something very hard to study objectively (not saying it can't be done -- but it would require lots of repeated studies looking at different isolated aspects).

In any case, from a purely genetic standpoint, I can see pros and cons to sticking with your own genetic group. But I don't think apparently racial similarities necessarily correlate with being more genetically similar. That's more of an ethnic similarity, which is an entirely different story.
