Pointy sticks!

No, not knitting needles, arrows! It was the first lesson of my archery course. And I loved it. Modern recurve bows to learn on (I want to go in the direction of wood/longbow later). Mostly trying to develop a correct, consistent stance. I won the first-lesson-beginners competition. By 18 points. :-)

sport, shiny

Ooooh, shiny! Archery is fun :-)

I'm crap with a recurve for the same reason that I'm crap with a rifle - right-handed but left-eyed. I'm not so bad with a longbow, where one isn't dependant upon lining up sights...

(I imagine that it would also be possible to put sights on a recurve such that they lined up with the other eye. But I've only ever shot with other peoples' bows)

there are left and right recurve bows - they specifically looked at right/left eyed rather than handed. I'm very strong right, but I already knew that as my right eye is significantly better than the left.

You're taking this Gondor Ranger thing seriously aren't you? Will the Elf Fantasy Fair allow you to carry a live longbow?
