I found the recipe for a bread starter - it's one of those things where you get (or make) a starter, feed it, and after 10 days you give away 3 parts and bake a bread.
Except it's not really a bread. I surmised this from the eggs and the sugar in the final recipe (it is called bread though). It smelled wonderful when baking (smelled of proper ( Read more... )

Hm, I remember a bread like that that was passed around a decade or more ago, that went by the name of 'Herman'. It was pretty tasty, indeed something between cake and bread in texture. The finished product was brown inside (like peperkoek, but different in texture) and had raisins and nuts in it, but I can't really remember if the brown was only from added spices.

This is that recipe - it's identical, though the version I have only suggests the spices / raisins / nuts. It's pale inside, so presumably the brown colour was from the spices.

But yeah, it's Herman Brood :-)

Probably, then :)

I really do recommend it with spices and raisins and nuts, though it's been... I think even 15 years or so since I've tasted it...

Am being quick (or perhaps that's "lazy") and not running to look at the recipe you linked, but your description makes me certain you made what I know as Amish friendship bread. My husband *LOVES* this stuff - so much so that I had to figure out how to make a starter when he was anxious to have some a couple years ago. My favorite way to make it is with chunks of apple and a sort of strusel-y, brown sugar and nuts topping. Yum!
