All right, so I've only got 5 minutes until dinner, so I can't make a big huge training post. In my own short and sweet way, then, I'll say that training is going great- it's good to be back, in the way that it's good to physically be in Windsor, as well as in the way that I am more like my old self again ( Read more... )

Points 2 & 4 are pretty much standard at British universities. We can swap files within the Durham network itself by using a purpose built program, but there's no ports open for file sharing, period. Same with the privacy - there's a stringent set of regulations, though I'm dubious as to whether they actually bother enforcing them. We just accept it, sooooo hopefully your lot won't give you too much hassle. It's why I was kinda surprised to see you ranting about it, as it's something we have as part and parcel of uni accommodation here.

3 is a bit pointless though.

Still, sounds like Windsor ITS are as awesome as Durham ITS. That is to say, they're incompetent halfwits without so much as a brain cell to rub together...

Anyway, glad you're enjoying the RA stuffage :-)

I think I'm largely now feeding off of other's people's annoyance- when I first heard it, it didn't seem like such a big deal- I also figured both were rather common for a university-based system. However, I do think there should be different rules for campus-wide access vs. rez access, as this is our home, and everyone else can go home and do what they want. We have no campus-wide file sharing system set up, but we've suggested it to them. The University currently only wants ports open that have an academic purpose, though, so they're not even saying whether or not they'll open ports for online gaming yet. I'm hoping that the new students will think it's a normal rez thing, as the rest of us are just used to contracting out for cable access. If we don't make it a big deal to them, they shouldn't think it's a big deal ( ... )

Ask them to add GoogleTalk, the new Google IM to their OK list. I'm switching over, and I have a feeling a lot of other people will be too, so you want to get that passed through as quickly as possible.

I can't believe they won't let you do online gaming. That is BS.

And to think, I was kicking and screaming because they put something about filesharing in the Integrity skit this year. I guess I'll just have to make you a ton of mix tapes.

PS: It is a big deal. It's not the specifics that count so much as the idea that they are trying to take away your freedom! FIGHT FOR BOVINE FREEDOM! HOLD YOUR LARGE HEAD HIGH! RUN FREE WITH THE BUFFALO OR DIE!!!

I've emaillled them about GoogleTalk, but nothing yet. If they decide not to add it, will we be back to being email and LJ-comment pals again? *wibbles*

Rez Council and the department will be fighting it all year, so who knows how quickly they could have to buckle and add a few things in order to prevent a residence riot? I, personally, will be redirecting all of my students to complain to ITS and not me- I have email addresses and phone numbers all ready for them to go nuts.

P.S: Please don't let any buffalo run free in these hallways. I don't think this building can take it. :X

I can't believe you haven't heard that song! If I can find it somewhere, I'll send it to you; it's about Cows With Guns resisting being turned into hamburgers. SO. FUNNY.

I'm still on AIM (in theory, of course, not like I have time to be online this week >.>). Also, GoogleTalk is (I think) multi-platform or whatever, so I can still AIM people using it. But I mean, come on, it's Google, why wouldn't I switch over?

I will totally send an email to your ITS and pretend to be a stupid if you think I can get away with it :D
