so far, the bummer for me is when i haven't seen the movies. when it was a contest, there was a bit more incentive to actually try to see them, though i doubt we could maintain that now that lj is a mere shadow of its former self. on the other hand, because it's not a contest anymore, there's no longer the whole "fuck citizen kane! it is no match for obscure italio horror anomaly" dynamic that used to arise from time to time.

i like the leading a discussion of something we've seen idea. or even assigning someone to see someone else's favorite that they haven't seen and responding to it. like, i could write about tangled or finis terrae, for example, because i haven't seen either, and people listed them as favorites.

Leading a discussion of someone else's favorite might work well. It could give one a little more with which to wrestle.

I've actually felt a pretty good incentive to see or revisit most of these. Seeing the pictures people post of the films sort of give me a better idea of what they are about and encourages my curiosity. I am kind of missing the disagreement aspect that a competition would provide, but only a little. I guess I would at least like to hear from everybody in sort of a "thumbs up, thumbs down" capacity what they thought of the film if they've seen it, or how much they care to see it thanks to the presentation/discussion.

the new process is great!

however, i'm a really timid//boring/inexperienced writer [which means i think i'm bad, and i'm really not comfortable hitting submit]. i haven't written anything [at all] since i graduated in the summer of '10. i am eager to participate, but i will be very slow. i don't think i could keep up with 1 a week because it takes me so long to contribute something worthwhile. [i've only just now started submitting thoughts about finis terrae, which are already two weeks late, and i work only 17 hours a week].

i love that it's happening because it gets me watching movies that previously weren't on my radar. i watched tangled yesterday and adored it. i never would have thought to follow up margaret, which i really liked, until you can count on me was mentioned, and i'm very glad i did. the only problem is, after seeing them, i don't feel like i have much to add to what's already been said

For what's it's worth, I think your thoughts on Finis Terrae are great (particularly in the two latter comments).

I do like the idea of the randomized selection just so it gets the group talking.

i'm going to charleston for a wedding on the 29th, and i don't get back to the 30th. since i just finished the book, i'll try to take LA MARGE / borowczyk, 1976 for thursday, no promises though. i'll also continue to add to finis terrae, i feel like i finally have momentum on it.

Either choosing someone to lead a discussion on a group-wide film or cabingoat's idea of a randomized selection would be a good way to keep momentum. I'd like to participate more myself but moving to a location with horrid wireless access is stunting that a bit.
