I just heard a metaphor about people sticking with bad situations. It goes something to the effect of

The metaphor fails because all water will, eventually, get cold.

I know that's a little off your point.

Is that so wrong, though? Everybody goes through at least lukewarm points. And so what if it's sometimes someone else pouring in the hot water for you?

Good point. It's certainly a more realistic metaphor than "love is a flame that burns eternally."
