Classic film must see starter list

I made this classic film must see starter list for a friend, and thought it might be worth sharing here. Of course, these are just my own essential favorites (& there are many more films I enjoy, but I was trying to make the list at least somewhat reasonable in length), so you may beg to differ as to what belongs on such a list. To which I respond

I've seen nearly all of these wonderful classic films and the majority of this list numerous times with the exception of the silents. I'm not sure why I haven't watched them, not one, but there you have it.

It took me a long time to get into silents, and I'm only really starting to learn about them now (thus the shortness of that part of the list). You have to really watch them, you can't multi-task while viewing them like I often do. So they take more time/concentration to get into.
